Prof - They told me to keep taking pictures of the temp when I start and finish drives, so I have been doing that.

Trax - That may be the case, but the entire process has been extremely frustrating.

I swung by the dealership on the way to work and they scanned my truck, found the U0101 code, and said "it's probably just a fluke that it happened. we cleared the code, you shouldn't have any more issues". I reminded them that my trans has been overheating and they told me to bring it back on Monday so they can try to figure out what's going on. They also told me their only transmission mechanic has 7 vehicles waiting to be fixed, so they can't get me in before then.

I also love the

You-My transmission has been acting up.

Dealer-Well there are no codes

You-Hey i finally have a code for you

Dealer-Well that code was a fluke.

Haha... it seriously is one big joke. I considered just trading mine in, but I won't find one with all the options my truck has for anywhere near the price I paid for mine. I know this isn't a common problem on Silverados, so I am not neccesarily going to switch brands, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried about the reliability of my particular truck.

GM Engineering got back to the dealership. On Monday they will be checking the expansion valve, transmission, fluid cooler and thermal bypass valve. So, at least now they will finally be looking at something more than a code reader

UPDATE: THE DEALERSHIP FOUND THE PROBLEM! Miraculously, after all that diagnosing, or lack theirof.

The Thermal Bypass Valve needs to be replaced. The best part? NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. Go figure.

The dealership was nice enough to request GM pay 50% of the repair, but I am not holding my breath.

How hard is it to replace it myself? I would do a tstat delete but I live in NJ, and the cold weather worries me. I am driving my truck to GA for 5 months of training, starting in January, so I need this fixed ASAP.

Thanks for the input from everyone.

Good to hear. It should be cheap at least. I will be surprised if you have to pay over $150.

It is a shame warranty doesn't cover it 100% especially after everything you have been through.

Maybe the trans thermostat was stuck shut. Not likely but possible. Maybe consider a delete?

Thanks for the link OilFracker.....I did a thermostat delete on my Tundra which needed it hugely. I'm guessing I will need to do the same with the 2500HD as I tow a lot and live in the desert SW. I will wait until I do some towing to see if I need to do this, but your post saved me from having to do all the research. Thanks again!!

"Your 2500 should also have a different transmission"....ok, that brings up a different topic. I have been searching to see what tranny I have. Bright ideas where I can find that? Can't find it in the owners manual or on forums, or even in a general search on Google. Is it stamped on the trans housing? When I have searched, I have only seen two trans discussed with Silverados, that being the 6 or 8 speed. I have the 6 speed. Under the 6 speed, I see only 6l80/6l90.....so if you have ideas I'm all ears. Thanks for the help Ferraiolo1

FWIW, this page says I likely have the 6l80/6l90 tranny,

If you have a 2500 gas truck, you can only have the 6l90e. If you have a diesel truck you will have the allison 1000.
