Upper ball joints

Hi all,

The left ball joint has gone, so I need replacement. On RA i can only find the whole upper arm but no upper ball joints.
My truck is rebuilt as an RV, al the time near GVWR and I also drive it offroad, if possible. Suspension is stock, except the king shocks.

Any idea where I can get only the upper ball joints? What brand should I go for? I'm looking for the best and strongest ones availlable, my life is to short to buy cheap stuff ;)

Any recommendation for a reliable ball joint press? What other special tools and parts do I need for this work?

Because I live in Europe I can't just walk down the street to the next parts store, most of them don't even know if a Silverado is something to eat or something else, so unfortunately, asking here for parts is mindless  ;) That said, I'd need a place where I can order these parts online.

Thx

When it comes to suspension parts, you can't go wrong with MOOG. I replaced uppers on my 2001 Silverado, by finding the right size by comparison only, so I'm not sure how that would work for you. I pressed them out and back in with a hand press, and a long cheater bar. Wasn't a terrible job, but not something I want to do anytime soon again.

As other mentioned...the upper ball joints are not replaceable on stock upper control arms. Some aftermarket ones may be though but will be significantly more expensive.

I guess that you live in Iceland, since a lot of heavy weight USA made trucks run there.

Yes, you should order those parts from RockAuto.com, there are a lot of choice for your application. For upper control arm and ball joint replacing, you don't need any special tool like ball joint press. Ball joint and upper control are one piece assembly. But you may need Caster / Camber Cam Bolt Kit being ready in case it is necessary.

For your situation, the shipping cost is very high.

Thank you all for your help.

Also when ordering the control arms will probably ask if aluminum or steel. To determine if steel use a magnet if it sticks it is steel if not it is aluminum.
Were aluminium UCA also used in the HD trucks? On my 3500HD I definitely have steel ones, or is this cast iron? Anyway, they have some rust on them...(also a way to tell if aluminium or not ;) )

Would they also be in the same amount more durable? If yes, are there such ones availlable for the stock, not liftet suspension.
I was thinking about the aftermarket UCA, but the ones I found are for lifted suspensions only and I was told not to use these because the stress to the driveshafts, shocks and other components could be increased significantly (the stock UCA are used to restrict the downward movement of the front suspension). A little more downward movement for the front suspension would be great but not at the price of damaging the King shocks (btw. best upgrade I made to the suspension) or the driveshafts.

Good argumentation, but no, I live there where mr Louis Chevrolet came from, in Switzerland ;)
Here in Switzerland all US trucks are quite exotic. We have quite a few Dodge Ram, a few older GM Trucks and nearly no Ford F or newer GM trucks driving around. Most poeple know the Ram, and because they don't know anything else, they think all US pickups must be Ram...I'm not giving up trying to explain that there are other manufacturers on the market ;)

I was told Moog would be great, but at RA the MOOG RK622128 R-Series are listed as "economy". As "daily driver" they list no Moog part, only the MEVOTECH CMS501195 (supreme) and the ACDELCO 45D10710 Professional. Are the Mevotech or the Acdelco really better?

That was mainly why I was trying to get only the ball joint. But actually, it depends on how fast I need the parts. If I chose the most economical (and slowest) shipping it would cost me around 45$ (consolidated delivery, delivery time up to 3 weeks). The faster shipping options cost from 100$ up to 180$...Because it isn't my daily driver, I can live with a delivery time of up to 3 Weeks...and 45$ for shipping would be ok.

Thanks again.

Based on Moog catalog, MOOG RK622128 R-Series; Complete Arm w/ Ball Joint is the only choice for your truck application.

Don't know that MEVOTECH is a marketing company or manufacturer, could be either one or both. If it is NOT a manufacture, their products could be from MOOG.

Thanks. Based on that I've done some research. Moog seems to have two series, the RK and the CK and the RK seems to be the cheaper one. The CK has a so called "problem solver" technology built in. More details here

Seems to be a manufacturer from Canada: http://www.mevotech.com Not sure about the quality. In forums for other makes I find from "really good" to "never again" everything. But I read the same things about the cheap Moog line (the RK).

2001-2010 2500 is a moog k669
Unfortunately in 2011 that changed, stronger frame, more payload and probably because of that changed suspension parts.

Looks like the 2011 1500 ball joint is an oddball. Looks easy to screw up for an average Joe, which is probably why they don't like to sell it alone.
The 2011 3500HD doesn't have these kind of eccentric, bolted ball joints. They have straight, pressed in ones: http://partsonline.mevotech.com/details/TXMS501195

Looks like the upper control arm ball joint is replaceable on yours carlos. Check this site and choose your engine size. Suggest sticking with AC Delco or Moog.

These are the parts assuming you have the 6.0 engine. If not, plug in correct one and recheck parts.
