Uncle has offered me the 454 out of his old farm truck.
Can I make this engine work with my truck its got a carb on it. its very old school.
would it cost me more to rig my truck up with this engine?
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks chris

go find a junkyard 5.3 for 1000 bucks and put it in. I would like to know what caused the cylinder walls to be gouged. also your lifters right on the cam, not the crank. but that sucks to hear man. hopefully you figure something out. thats a crappy spot to be in

Ok so I have tracked it down to 2 options
1) I can get an engine from a junk yard for $1500 its got 18000 km on it but needs new water pump and intake manifold. what does this mean?
good deal? Its also active fuel management.
2) There is a shop that sells rebuilt engines for $2800 without active fuel management or $3884 with active fuel. No way do I want active fuel so can I get the cheaper one without active fuel and use a tuner to get rid of it from the computer? will it work like that or will I need a new computer.
along with these engines you need intake manifold, exhaust manifold.

If I do option 1 the engine will go in and then the truck will be put up for sale
If I do option 2 Ill drive it till it dies again.
Opinions on the matter?

And the dealer called me and I talked with their tech he says when the cylinder 4 lifter collapsed it blocked off the fresh air coming in. the cylinder filled up with gas and oil. the gas thinned out the oil. Then the piston was going up and down with no lube, without the lube the rings were enough to gouge the cylinder wall that they can feel it with their finger nail. Gm standard says that they cant do anything with the engine cause that cylinder will burn oil.

This probably explains why the royal purple was so thin when I took it out of the engine. It must of been mixed with gas.

18000 klms is what 11000 miles, do you get any kind of warranty from the wrecker's, like 90 day's ???? Can it be verified that this is the actual mileage and not just some # they are telling you?? If it can be verified that it is a low mileage motor i would consider it, you can take the intake and water pump of your's, Will you be pulling the motor yourself or having a shop do it ?, Since it is a AFM motor from the wrecker you can get it tuned after to delete the AFM from activating,

Is it possible to hear this motor running ? might be something to seriously look at, i would check into this even more might just be your answer, Good luck

No the Motor is just sitting on a shelf in a warehouse. I might try to install it with the help from a friend thats what im thinking cause that will save like $2000 to $3000. so far that's what I have been quoted from a few different places. Still burns that the dealership can justify charging Me $900 just to tell me I need a new motor.

I Have talked this one over with some people and decent engines with 90 000 km on them go for about $2200, The engine at the scrap dealer I'm not sure about it cause they say its only 18000 km on it and its only $1500 bucks. I think something is fishy about that.
I'm looking at possibly getting the re manufactured long block and just build off of that with my old engines parts. I'm going to get it done and if lights come on the dash ill take it down to the local dyno shop and get a custom tune. I was calling places to see if they could machine my engine and they want more than a brand new from the factory. They have heard of this problem though many times.
Im going to get a mechanic friend of mine to install the engine, he told me its a lot more work than I think.
Something annoying though is dealership said to put the engine back together so I can take it someplace else Will cost me an extra $600. So now I have a pile of parts in my engine bay that I have to remove before I get it towed.
Lets see how it goes.
Anyone know of someplace that I can get a good quality engine in Winnipeg?

Finding and actually buying a good used engine will take a bit of research on your part, Price of said used engine should be determined on the mileage and how complete it is, I have seen used motor's that only had the block, head's and intake, other's i have seen so complete all that was needed was to throw a starter and Alt. on it.

Another thing you want to ask will they offer you any kind of warranty on this used motor ? 30-60 or even 90 day's, You want something in writing to fall back on just in case.

And go pick up your motor part's and get your truck out of that dealership, just make sure nothing is loose or just hanging freely in your engine bay and get it towed out of there, being charged 900 by them Sry to say was a rip off,

Good luck to you

Got A tow truck to bring my truck back home till I Figure out whats happening. Something fishy I noticed is that all the fluids in the truck have been drained. When checking my fluids when I got it home there is no break fluid and it has been disconnected from the master cylinder. They also drained power steering, coolant, and oil. Did they have to do this ? Or were they just getting it ready for an engine swap?
Just wondering if this is normal?

So how far did they go on this tear down inspection What's in your engine bay now just the bottom end with Crank and pistons ??? As far as the Brake fluid really not sure about that one, Coolant for sure . You have all the part's from the motor ??? The best thing i have heard you say is you got it towed out of there.

Yah I checked Before I paid the bill that I had all my parts the exhaust manifold is in my back seat wrapped up in plastic, they also put the air intake back there along with the coils and wires from the passenger side and the fuse panel cover, belts, some plastic hose's. Inside the engine bay there was wires hanging around everywhere so I taped them down. The intake manifold was just resting on top so I used some metal wire and tied it down. The head was held on loosely by 2 bolts so I tighten them up and it felt solid enough the valve cover was just resting on top couldn't find bolts for it so I just took it off and put it in the back seat with the exhaust manifold. That's where its at right now

Well I Decided on picking up a used engine and me and a mechanic friend installed the used engine.
The used engine is only exposed to have 16000 km on it but it has a problem. It chirps like crazy like there is a cricket inside of it. it gets louder as you accelerate and around 2800 rpm it screams. The chirp comes and goes.
what I have done is I have taken all the belts off thinking it was a problem with the belts or pulleys but of course that is too easy. The chirp got louder when I took the belts off. I took the valve covers off and the rockers are all moving. I don't have any codes except for malfunctioning cats.
Anyone have any idea what this chirp could be coming from. Some readings I have done say its a worn camshaft

Also I took apart the old engine that was in my truck and the " HUGE Score" that the dealership told me I had is only about 1" long and you can barley feel it with your fingernail. Would I have burnt a quart of oil a month with that kind of score on my cylinder wall? :?:

That's not good. I hope the used engine has some type of warranty.
yeah it has warranty but they are making me do some work to claim the warranty. Every time I call them up asking for my money back they transfer me to the mechanic and tells me to check this and check that. For example the oil sender filter. He also got me to change my oil filter and some other stuff.

Well I loosened the rockers one at a time to see if that would make the squeak go away. On cylinder 3 exhaust the squeak stopped and its apparently the cam shaft that's shot. By taking the load off of the camshaft it no longer squeaked so I'm Hoping that's enough for me to get my warranty from the guy. that's part of the engine and its not in working properly so he should have to pay for repairs or give me my money back I hope.
