AFM/DOD delete, Cam swap and tuning

I see a lot of posts about AFM/DOD delete but not much on the tuning after. 2011 4wd Silvarado 5.3L. I have lifter ticking so going to do a full AFM and VVT delete. My friend who owns a shop and does a lot of LS work recommended the BTR TRUCK TORQUE CAM - 30202111R1, SPECS: 202/202 .511/.511 111+1 for a mild upgrade while I'm changing everything anyway. I was told that I shouldn't even start the truck before a new tune is installed in the ECM and that I should have a dyno tune. Adding about $500 to this project, does that sound right?

That is in the rhelm of normal for a good tune all said and done.

Dyno tune or a street tune is fine. A combination of both would be about the best you can get imo. Get the major writing done on the dyno and then run it on the street to fine tune it to your driving.

Me personally I wouldn't drive it there. If it was a few miles away that's one thing. But 50 miles is a bit far with the engine likely running pretty poorly. It may not be too bad since that's a prettyle mild cam, so that's up to you if you want to drive it or not.

You can start the truck without the tune on it you'll be fine. I would not drive the 50 miles and in my opinion you are wasting your money on a dyno tune. Do a $300 ecm tune only, the guy that tuned my cammed 6.0 swap was like that and he was extremely helpful. A dyno tune is more for if you are going big hp and need to really really dial it in. Street tune where the tuner drives it around a does his thing is the stuff though

Definitely a nice bump in low RPM torque. It just seems like everything is easier. The truck doesn't struggle to do anything. I always thought the truck felt heavy from a stop, or while normal driving wanting to speed up 5-10 mph it felt sluggish to get moving. Always had it where I give it gas and the rpm would jump a bit and then drop quickly unless I jumped on it (I think that was part of the VVT). Now it gets moving easily and does what I want it to. And getting from 40 to 100 mph is very fast and pulls HARD.. Loving this truck by far more than I ever had before..

I just finished rebuilding my 08 Sierra and I installed the same cam. I'm curious as what was changed in your tune. A local shop flashed my new ecm a couple years ago after my stock one died, so he should still have the license to my truck on his HP tuners. I'm not sure if it expires. I've deleted AFM and my truck doesn't have VVT.

Where would you recommend I get a Street tune? How much$ on average?

Just ask your tuner about it and talk to them about driving it around and getting it street tuned. My tuner I know does a drive around tune where he'll take your vehicle and get all the live data and tune it. Similar to what the Lewtune does but it is in a live scenario so you can really really dial in every specific application.

Cost wise it should be a little cheaper than a dyno. For me I think the street tune was 300-400(?) and the dyno was 550 but honesty cannot remember. I just did the $300 PCM tune

I prefer both. dyno for actual numbers and you can see what's goin on at all RPMs.
But, also street tune after to more fine tune the tune for actual street load the dyno cant simulate.

Hi, just search "Lew Tune" on this forum re remote tuning where you can capture, send and receive back an updated file to load.
On the Cams, check Richard Holdener's YouTube channel he has tested the BTR torque and truck cams stage 1,2,3. I ended up going with the stage 1 truck cam and its awesome. Truck ran on start up fine until I captured a log and sent it to Lew for an update.
