Hi
I´m new in the forum and have a new (to me) Silverado 2008 lt
I have no issues with the truck
My question is wich is the best oil additive to "clean" the engine
The engine is standard, I read about the AFM problems and I´m gonna search a range or similar in fleabay (nothing similar here in Chile)
I´m using synthetic oil
I really apreciate the help

Thanks a lot

I've never personally used any additive. I'm a firm believer that if you need an additive to your oil, then you should be using a different oil. That being said, maybe it's harder for you to find a good, dependable source for a quality motor oil. I don't know. You said you're using synthetic, but not the brand.

Now, if you're wanting to clean the engine up, I have had good luck personally with Seafoam treatment for all of my fuel systems. I've not used it in my '15 Silverado yet, but did in my '01, and my '07 Grand Prix with the LS4, and my boat motor.

Others will chime in I'm sure.

Also, welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum.

My recco would be to get a Range AFM Delete, or a Diablo Intune device and disable the AFM as soon as you can. The Range just plugs into the OBD2 port, and only does that one purpose, disable AFM. The tuner can do that plus a lot more, but you may not need or want all of that.

To clean the engine, you can run a quart of trans fluid in th crankcase for a week or so, then change the oil. If you really want it clean, fill it with fresh oil and more ATF, or some Seafoam and a new filter. Run that for a few days, then drain and refill with a good filter and a good synthetic.

With the use of a good synthetic, you don't need additives, and some additives can actually inhibit a synthetic oil's ability to work as well as they do.

I use Amsoil in my truck, but it's not as easy to get and costs a bit more, but I'm happy with it.

AFM delete is also well worth it on these trucks I did mine with the tune from Superchips you can just buy a tuner connect it up and flash your computer. You can also set it to run on higher octane gas where set your speedometer if you've got bigger tires. Set your shift points exc. I hear a lot of guys like the range one as well as you can just pull it off and AFM comes back.

I wish you the best of luck with your truck

That's not an afm delete. You're just Turing off the system with the tuner.

The delete is actually removing all the afm lifters and components inside the engine. The only way to totally be rid of it

But regular oil changes is your best additive, but there are always a few old timers who stand firm with their mystery oils and such.

Marvel mystery oil to the oil and gas. Replace one quart of oil with MOO and my crankcase is seemingly so clean that right after my oil change today, its hard to see where the oil level is. The oil on the dipstick stays clean even after entering a 55k mile crankcase. Truck runs dip quiet as well after I starter using the MMO.

Quality engine oil already contains some detergents and other additives to enhance ties performance. If the inside of your engine is dirty it's best left where it is. Using additives or ATF (is high in detergents) will dislodge dirt/sludge and quickly plug the filter which will then bypass. Regular oil changes with reasonable quality oil is all it takes to keep things clean

To add to this... if the dirt from the engine makes it down to the pan it will start to plug up the pickup screen.

The only time I run oil additives is when buying a used vehicle simply to try and clean the engine because I don;t know how it was taken care of. I run seafoam 1/3 can gas/oil/brake booster and have also tried MMO. I'm not really sure either one works to be honest but if you have ever ran seafoam through the brake booster hose it will smoke like crazy for a good 5 minutes. I do agree with everyone else, regular oil changes with a good oil is key. However when you buy a used vehicle you don't know if the owner changed the oil at 3k, 5k, 10k miles or more or what type of oil was used. Seafoam has been around for awhile and i have used it in probably 15 vehicles over the years and it always seemed to make the engine run a little better/smoother, of course that could have just been a placebo effect.

you can get a idea of how the previous owner did on maintenance.. Do a oil change and see how long it takes to turn dirty. It will usually give you a good indication iv always done this and some trucks turned black within a matter of a few hundred km.. Current one i just got had a fresh change when i got it about 3000km and its still pretty transparent. Dont know how well i trust the oil life monitor as its still reading 57%

The primary purpose for magic fluids is to remove money from your wallet.
You might first figure out where the oil is coming from, by looking at the spark plugs, to see if any are different from the others, a compression and/or leakdown test on all the cylinders and perhaps consider a catch can to lessen the oil going through the intake.

What @davester3500 said.

And please don't revive 7 year old posts. If you can't find d the info you're looking for, start a new thread.

Also, on this forum, we prefer not to use the term "best;" instead, we evaluate everyone's and anyone's personal experience with a product, and make a recommendation based on usage. Whether or not it's "best" or not is anyone's guess.
