There are a couple of (legal) issues at play which made me remove the LG module.
] My contract with the GMC dealer was to purchase a car, nothing more, nothing less. Most probably the fine print includes stipulations that they can sell the data acquired through onstar to data brokers. If this is the case, this should be made clear and result in a discount (Netflix also gives a discount if they can run ads by you, don't they ?). GM seems to run some background business selling data without explicitly informing their customers. Go into your settings and look at the data Sirius collects...why on earth do they need your phone and other data ? Wake up people, you are the product and you're not being compensated. Conversely, if you're not interested being compensated for sharing (possibly private) data, what about your privacy rights ? Correct...the fine print...It's a good thing this is currently the subject of a lawsuit in TX, these are predatory practices that should not be allowed.
] I saw an argument in one of the threads above that we can only stop 1% of the data collection. Please don't roll over and give up. Think through the situation and address the issue. Disable following items from collecting your data : a) car (explained in this thread) ; b) TV (microphones embedded in TV and often remote); c) cell phone. On the latter, I am happy to report that the car couldn't even detect my phone when the dealer tried to talk me into connecting through the GMC app. I won't go into detail on this matter, but look into running a Pixel phone on open source such as GrapheneOS.
] While OnStar is sold as a safety device, I think the risk far exceeds the benefits. Something that records your every move can be collected during criminal proceedings and be used against you. As somebody who has worked parts of his career in executive compliance roles I have seen our government at work and it isn't pretty. Some DA offices will throw the most insane allegations against the wall and hope they will stick. Some of the famous ones such as the Southern District of NY DA office now measure ROI (return on investment) on their cases. These maggots will gladly claim you were parked at a strip club even if you were at the Walmart next door, just to stack the cards and the court of public opinion against you. There is no honor among thieves. There was a period in my life where I was of the opinion that 'I have nothing to hide'. Wrong. This does not help you when you deal with legal predators, and the US is full of them.
] Lastly, a buddy of mine works as a government protection agent. What do you think they do when they receive a batch of Suburbans ? So, if ineffective, why would they go through the effort of disabling it for themselves ?
