Is a K&N Air Filter worth the money in a 5.3?

My 2006 is a daily driver and I'm looking to get a K&N Air filter for just a slight improvement in throttle response just for the heck of it. I've heard that the full CAI system is not worth the money by itself because you'll notice very very little difference. That's why I thought about going for the filter, it's much cheaper, easier to install, and I can pick it up at my local Advance Auto. What do you guys think? Is the filter worth the 50 or 60 bucks?

By the way, I have an exhaust system installed but it's not Flowmasters like my sig says. The mechanic told my dad that it was just like Flowmasters but much cheaper and he's put it on countless newer trucks. It sounds great, but I have no idea what it is because I got it put on as a gift. Don't know if that helps answer my question or not!

I use AEM Dryflow and all you have to do is wash it out. No oiling required. Performance wise I noticed a slight increase in throttle response. Picked mine up for 40.00.
My brother put a Airaid Jr with synthamax dry filter on his Silverado and after driving it I will be buying one for my truck. Performance increase was very noticeable. 160.00

Hi, I got the full K&N intake on my 2011 Silverado w/ custom Magnaflow exhaust and a 03 Wrangler. I will say there is a increase in performance. Even with the simple swap of the drop in K&N is a little help but if you could save you're cash n get the full you're better off! Just remember with either choice don't forget to wash n oil your air filter regularly! People read the box once n forget! Ha but best wishes to you! By the I am experiencing 21.78 mpgs city and 28.81 Hwy.

NO !!!!! go dry filter!!!! having to clean and oil sucks after a while...... plus what do you do while are waiting for the filter to dry ??? can't drive it or buy a spare filter to swap out. cleaning oil out of tube it not fun either. my opinion take it or leave. I have a Volant with power core no maintenance for 100k. backed by the manufacturer... love it check it out

Just the fact that you never have to buy another air filter again makes it worth it, IMO. Performance chat aside. Don't let the filter "Oil everywhere, OMG it's everywhere!" folks dissuade you either...

Make sure the filter is nice and dry after cleaning. (Baking in hot sun works the best or blast with compressed air) Then oil per the directions and wipe off the excess with a rag. Never had an issue with any vehicle as far as the MAF malfunctioning because of the K/N. Its the folks that oil the filter before its dry or apply way too much oil that create issues with the MAF.

One day I would actually like to see real hard proof that the K&N gives better performance than a good paper filter for 99% of street driving.
I have seen results performance wise from full on race results.
But if they are so good then why doesn't GM manufactures recommend them? Do the Corvettes,SS and HP Camaro's come from the factory with them?
Matter of fact I am trying to find any manufacturer that uses them?
Also would like to see oil testing results from a vehicle using a paper filter then switching to a wet filter. Is there any proof that the wet traps more dirt or less?
Changing out a good paper filter every other year is not a deal breaker for me.
I use Wix or NAPA Gold filters. Four hold down screws-yank the old filter-slip in the new one-tighten the four screws and Done!
Do not need special cleaners, Don't have a sink in my garage to wash it out and don't want the truck apart while I am waiting for the filter to dry!
I have been down the K&N and Volant route, Only thing I noticed was,,,,,Nothing other than noise from the Volant and not a darn bit of difference from the K&N.
Other than good marketing I am not a believer!

One day, I'd like to see all threads over 5 years old locked and archived, so people can still see the thread and information, but not bring up old stuff like this and act like it's still an on-going topic...lol

I lost that fight though....long live dead thread resurrection and no one giving a rats ass!

I'm split on that belief. Some yeah, but this is an ongoing debate and some new info is a good thing. Heck I actually just spent 40 minutes checking out and looking for new Youtube videos about this subject.
But I guess I'll leave findings on my plate. Don't want to drag on an old post!
Kinda like, Why don't Mods lock the threads of members that move on and buy other vehicles as in,,Non GM owner any more? That way when some members that do not want to hear about or could care less about the other brands don't get chastised about that. I mean after all,, In the SilveradoSierra header, Its actually in BOLD RED letters.
Guess comes down to "Do as I say" Not as I Do" !

to funny.... On a stock engine the factory filter set up flows more than enough air their is 0 benefit... Also their is lots of documented proof from users of these filters that they will dust your engine in both automotive and motorsport applications... So basically you are paying for a sticker to remind you of who to blame when your engine is shot...

Anyone who thinks k+n filters dont work are really ill informed. They are a reputable company and have been successfull for many years. I have used them on more than 15 applications and they proved beneficial on every one. I'm confident I'm gonna see the same result on my 05 Silverado. Never any quality issues, never any variance in performance day to day. Very durable. Love their product. Anything less than a positive opinion is slandering and should be reported to k+n for review of content and evidence

So sue me. I hated my K&N. With the Airaid MIT, the K&N vibrated so badly at WOT that it sounded like a chainsaw was ripping thru my dash. I put the OEM paper element back in and the vibration noise was gone. The K&N went in the trash.

Lolz. Are you putting your truck on the dyno before and after? There is zero benefit from it other than not having to replace it.

We aren't I'll informed. We just realize it's a marketing gimmick.

I'm sure you enjoyed playing with their little flow bench contraption on the auto parts counter didn't you?

Agreed. Just a marketing gimmick.
To make a comparison, I'll use home HVAC return air filters. Any HVAC service person that's any good, with years of experience will tell you to use the cheap filters. They don't restrict airflow, and catch just as much particulate matter as the pricey ones. You pay for marketing.

I had a K&N on my '16 and had transmission problems. Dealer blamed it on the filter. Said there's a bulletin on it. Changed filter and problems still there. Taking it in again next week.
