little help? rear brake rotors for a dual wheel 3500

A little help please. I am replacing the rear brakes, calipers, rotors on my 2005 GMC 3500 sierra 4X4. It is a dual wheel 3 yard dump truck. The caliper got stuck on the left rear while I was plowing and fried the rotor. I have removed all of the essentials; wheel, caliper, caliper bracket, axle cap bolts, axle, clip ring, square "key", and the bearing keeper nut. All that is left is the hub/rotor. It is my understanding that this should slide off, so I can replace the rotor. It is loose, but as I look inside the axle chamber, I see the bearings and they do not seem to want to come out. Almost like the bearings are holding the hub/rotor in place. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any input.

i think you are ready for old reliable, mr. 5 lb hammer, bearing is stuck on inner axle stub, make sure that the outer wheel bearing is removed or everything but the brg. some set ups have 2 locking nuts with a keyed washer inbetween. dont remember if your trk has one or 2 locking nuts,,or maybe i am the loose nut! put on your glasses and break out the flashlight and take a good look at it, then wack away! DONT FORGET TO ADD DIFF FLUID WHEN U R DONE!

thanks for the reply. Yep, the sledge was my next thought, but, i am a little scared. I have both rear wheel assemblies off and the fact that they are both identically stuck, and to boot, on each wheel, i cannot seem to get the outside bearings out, as they seem to be seated in some kind of channel inside, holding the hub assembly in place. I did have the flashlight looking inside for another key or retainer clip, i did not see one but i will look again. I am afraid if i start whacking on it, i may mess something up inside. I will take a picture and try to attach it here. And I did not mention before, but the parking brake is released. Thanks for your advice.

If you followed this post, here is an update. I got the hub/rotor to slide off. I used a bar, pried out, on the back of the the rotor, toward me, and it slid off. NOTE: The outside bearings stay in the hub during removal and can be removed AFTER the rotor/hub is off, if necessary. Now the hard part, punching out the lug bolts to separate the rotor. Would like to thank jeff the wrench for the reply. Back to work.

Let us know how it goes! Brake jobs can be pretty frustrating sometimes... I recently helped two buddies out with a car, and a 1-hour job turned into 4.5 hours, and we only got 2 brakes done :shock:!

No alcohol for us, Vince- we were all 19 and under (I'm 20 now). Heck, we were so engaged in the project, we didn't even have time for mom's freshly made chocolate cake :eek: .
