Reverse wire for backup camera.

I ordered an aftermarket backup camera (same I had in my Tundra, so easy install), but I am having trouble finding out where the reverse wire is so I can tap into it for the camera to power on when put into reverse. I feel like there should be a wire that I can tap into going into the reverse lights, but I also understand that the reverse wire is under the driver's side dash? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I put in aftermarket reverse lights since I blacked out my tail lights and had to tap into my reverse light for them to turn on when I put the truck into reverse.

Your best bet would be to remove the tail light and check the color of the power wire coming from the reverse light housing (Mine was green).

All your tail light wires should tie into the plastic protective tubing that then goes under the truck. Follow that plastic tubing and pick a spot to tie in your camera to your reverse light wire (using the correct color wire)

Or if you want to do it the simple way, just splice into the reverse light power wire an inch off of the light housing instead of following the plastic tubing under the truck.

Let me know if you need more help.

Thank you. This should be all I need. One more question, though: Will it hurt anything to use the same reverse light to connect the reverse wire and the power wire for the camera? This way, I would only have to run the chord that connects the camera to the head unit.

Are you using a relay terminal to hook up your camera? I'm not too sure about the power loss you might have.

I have a reverse camera and the aftermarket reverse lights hooked up to my reverse lights (so they turn on when the truck is in reverse), but I used relays for both and don't have an issue with the factory light being dim or lack of power.

Here you go.

This is where you get power and the Reverse signal for the camera. It is called the MBEC and is located just to the left of the gas pedal. Pull the cover off to expose the wiring under it.

Disregard my wiring and markings on the photo.
Pin #8 in block X10 for the reverse trigger signal and then uses either Constant, Accessory or Ignition accordingly for power depending on when you want the camera to be powered. Usually Ignition.

And here are some install instructions that you can adapt to your particular camera.

When I hooked this camera up to my Tundra, all I did was mount it around the license plate (license plate frame camera) and run the power wire to splice into the tail light (driver's side, but does not matter which tail light). I then ran the reverse trigger wire up into the footer of the front passenger side and spliced it into the reverse trigger wire (it was easy to locate this way). I then ran the chord that connects the camera to the head unit. When I put the truck in reverse, the camera popped up on the screen. When I put it in any other gear, the head unit screen went to normal. I did not use any relays or anything, just spliced and went on about my business.

What year is the vehicle in your pictures? Mine is a 2008. Also, what color is the reverse trigger wire, as I may just be able to splice into it coming out of the reverse bulb in the tail light?

My truck is a 2013. Your truck and mine should both be the same for the MBEC box. The reverse wire in your tailights should be green. If going that route, you could tap into the reverse (green) wire on the back of the trailer light plug as well.

I have an aftermarket Jensen Nav unit. I don't listen to anything but satellite radio and music on my phone, so I cannot speak of the radio reception. Sorry.

Running the camera off the lights shouldn't be a problem. Better yet you could updated the bulbs to LED, they are far superior if you get the ones that have projectors and leds around the side and draw less power. I tried to use the reverse wire location in the MBEC under the dash and the reverse pole wasn't active in my 09. When i created a switch in my dash to turn the reverse lights on manually for towing etc, i used relays and tapped into the wires after the fuse box under the dash. Two wires run to each light in the back and i believe they are light green colored in the large loom by the firewall.

This install took me about 30 minutes. Having already installed this exact camera in my Tundra, all I had to figure out was which wires to connect to in the bulbs (connected positive from camera to green wire from bulb and negative wire from camera to the middle black wire from the bulb). After that, I just ran a wire from the reverse wire in the head unit to the reverse wire in the panel by the brake pedal, ran the camera wire and connected it to the head unit, checked to make sure everything worked, and put everything back together.

The only issue I have is that I now have two screws left over (phillips head) from removing the dash parts....

Those screws were spare parts the factory puts under the dash in case you lose one or two while disassembling the dash. You can put them in the spare parts bin where you keep the extra head bolts left over from the valve job last spring. ;)

I have a bin with 4 bolts left over from taking my leaf blower apart. Clearly were not necessary as it runs better now than before I took it apart. They over complicate everything these days. Why use 8 head bolts when 4 will do?

I have the rosen. I am not sure what other unit he sells that would fit our trucks. If you are talking about the Advent OGM-1, that is an older model and no longer in production.
I like the NAV a lot. It should suit you just fine. I have used Garmin stand alone products in the past and liked them as well, maybe better than the IGO Primo on the Rosen, but that was probably because I was just used to Garmin.
Anyway, yes, it is so awesome to have the NAV on a big screen and not up on the dash or windshield somewhere. Plus, it mutes the sound from the radio or whatever when it wants to give you verbal directions which is great. I used to have the GPS and stereo compete with each other when they were separate units.

Yah, I dont think you will be dissapointed. No free lifetime updates on it though. You can buy a lifetime update package or just pay on a per update basis. I think it is about $70 per individual map update. I figure once every three or 4 years is fine unless you live where they is a lot of major road construction going on.

Oh, and if you do decide to go with a Rosen Carshow unit, make sure you talk to Walt at ADCMobile.com before you buy elsewhere. You won't find better customer support anywhere and his prices are in line with the few other sources for the Rosen.
